The Monumental Cemetery of Milan is partly wheelchair accessible. The main entrance is step-free and many principal routes can be reached without steps, but gravel, uneven ground and some raised areas can make movement difficult. This guide explains what to expect and how to plan a more comfortable visit.

Monumental Cemetery accessibility: quick answers
Is Milan’s Monumental Cemetery wheelchair accessible?
Partly. The main entrance and many principal routes are step-free, but gravel, uneven surfaces and some raised sections can be difficult for wheelchair users.
Is the main entrance step-free?
Yes. The main entrance has wide gates and no steps. The nearby Infopoint can be reached using a ramp, although the approach includes a short gravel section.
Are wheelchairs available?
The latest published information reports two courtesy wheelchairs, subject to availability and an identity document left as a deposit. Contact the Infopoint before travelling if one is essential.
Accessibility at a glance
- Admission is free for individual visitors and no booking is normally required.
- The main entrance has wide gates and no steps.
- Many principal routes are accessible, but gravel and uneven surfaces can make movement slower.
- The upper level of the Famedio can be reached by lift when it is in service.
- Two courtesy wheelchairs are reported as available, subject to availability and an identity-document deposit.
- The Ossuary, Crematorium and some raised eastern and western areas include steps or other barriers.
Getting there by accessible public transport
The M5 Monumentale station is about 140 metres from the cemetery’s main entrance. The station has lifts serving both travel directions when they are in service. Check ATM’s current lift and station accessibility information before setting out, especially if step-free access is essential.

Main entrance and Infopoint
The main entrance is step-free and wide enough for wheelchairs. The Infopoint is under the porticoes on the left after entering. The approach includes about 30 metres of gravel. Two steps, each about 13 centimetres high, can be bypassed using a ramp approximately 7 metres long with a reported 4% gradient.
The Infopoint is normally open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Staff can help with orientation and current information. Telephone: +39 02 884 45706.
Moving around the cemetery
The main central avenue and many important monuments are reachable without steps, but much of the surface is gravel and can be uneven. Manual wheelchair users may find some stretches tiring, particularly after rain. Allow extra time, choose supportive footwear and ask a companion to assist if useful.
Not every monument is step-free. The Ossuary, Crematorium and some raised areas on the eastern and western sides have steps. Routes can also change temporarily because of maintenance or cemetery operations.

Accessing the Famedio
The answer is basically no. The Famedio has two visitor levels. The upper level can be reached by a lift near the Infopoint when the lift is operational. The approach includes a ramp with a reported gradient of about 8%.
- Lift door: approximately 90 centimetres wide.
- Cabin: approximately 136 by 153 centimetres.
- Controls: Braille and raised lettering.
- Signals: audio and visual floor information.
If the Famedio lift is essential, contact the cemetery shortly before your visit to confirm that it is in service.
Wheelchairs, parking and vehicle access
The latest published accessibility information reports two wheelchairs available for visitors, subject to availability, with an identity document left as a deposit. Reserve extra time at arrival and contact the Infopoint in advance if you need one.
Four accessible parking spaces are reported around the cemetery perimeter. Eligible vehicles carrying a disabled parking-permit holder may be allowed inside during designated hours, generally from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on days when the cemetery is open. The permit holder must be on board. Rules and access points can change, so confirm arrangements with the cemetery before travelling.
Restrooms and visitor facilities
Restroom availability and accessibility can change during maintenance. A recent accessibility survey reported some facilities out of service at the time of inspection. Do not rely on a specific accessible restroom without checking first. Ask at the Infopoint on arrival or telephone ahead.
Visual, hearing and cognitive accessibility
The site has high-visibility signs and acoustic alarm signals in some areas. Reliable current information about induction loops, tactile orientation routes or dedicated sensory services was not available when this guide was checked. Visitors who need a specific accommodation should contact the cemetery in advance and describe their requirements.
Practical planning tips
